This topic made me laugh. As a former high school teacher I know my students would laugh at this because they knew me so well. What's so funny? I NEVER know the titles of the songs I'm listening too!!! I only know the tune. It probably goes back to the fact as a kid, what I listened to was censored to the point I barely could listen to anything outside of classical music or Disney soundtracks HA (I still wish things had been different for me in the listening arena, but now as a parent - I'm tempted to hide my kids from the world, so I totally get why my mother succumbed and I was in a musical bubble LOL!!!! Love you mom!)! When I went off to college, the world of musical genres opened to me and I appreciate a lot - but I never know what it is - hehe. That said, while knowing I'm probably forgetting a TON of good choices, here are 5 songs in random order:
U2 - Beautiful Day - There are about 3 other songs that would make this list too, but if I had to pick, this would be on that iPod. If I had to be alone in a deserted island, this would keep me upbeat.
Amazing Grace - This song has always lifted me and fed me. AMEN AMEN!!! I know God, having made me in His image does not see me as a wretch, but many days I feel like one. Just humming...The Lord has promised good to me...His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be...as long as life endures...can make my day whole again. I was blind, but now I see.
Another hymn would be on my iPod. Like Amazing Grace, I could pick an artist and make sure it made my iPod list. The hymn is It Is Well With My Soul by Horatio Safford. He wrote it after losing both his fortune and then later, most of his family in a boat sinking. For many, this is a deal breaker with God. But not for him. He knew there was more than this world to live for. His words: When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul. Refrain: It is well, with my soul, It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul.
The B-52s - Really, anything classic by these guys LOL. I loved Roam Around the World and Love Shack! Talk about some party music!
Powerful Ballads. You know...any of those big 80s songs, or Celine Dion or Josh Groban. I love to belt those out!!!
Chant or Eucharistic Hymns. I could name many I really love, especially in new recordings or our music group's arrangements of them. One could just be randomly picked for me. I find they put to music the words I feel as I approach the altar every Sunday. I also love chant. I admit it! It is so soothing to hear. I feel tied to the past somehow. I love how I hear more of it during Lent. It makes prayer very focused for me.
Country Tunes - I love country music :) Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, on and on....I never know the titles, but I love the music!!!
Sweet Home Alabama, Georgia On My Mind....I love these old rock 'n roll or jazz classics. I love those genres. I like how I feel when listening to them...either just feeling some freedom and some rock, or tied to a place and soothed.
Oops! I went too long! I'd better stop!!! I've already broken the rules!!!!! ACK!!

Okay, you are SO fired for going over...LOL! Don't worry, it's your meme, you can do what you want w/ it! No rules! Great list of songs to take w/ you. Although, I'm probably the only Christian who has never liked Amazing Grace. May I come join you in belting out the 80s & Josh Groban?
ReplyDeleteYes, please do!! Belt away!!
ReplyDeleteNo worries about Amazing Grace. You can like or dislike anything you please if I can go over 5 songs HAHA!!
Is it because of the wretch part? I know at our church, because of the idea that none of us are wretches because Christ died for us, our music group uses a different word - just curious if that was the clincher for you.
This meme is GREAT!!
This is TOO hard!! I love most any kind of music. I guess two that I would pick are In This Life by Colin Raye (mine and Jim's first dance song at our wedding) and God Bless the Broken Road by Rascall Flatts.
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not the wretch part. I'm not exactly sure why I don't like it. It may have to do w/ the melody...to me it seems to drag on & is kind of boring (I say as I watch the sky for a lightning bolt to strike me down...LOL!)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're enjoying this! I'm loving reading what you have to say!
You know, I always write mine before reading yours so I won't get any ideas, and what's funny is that I picked 2 songs the same (Beautiful Day & Amazing Grace, though I picked the Chris Tomlin version). I almost put Love Shack too (because it's so fun). I am enjoying reading/writing these. :)
