I'm plugging along with my Lent. I've been having great success with 40 bags/40 days (unlike last year) and I've done really well at doing the daily Lenten Meditations from the Companion Guide to Small Steps. I'm also doing my 365 readings from the main book, Small Steps for Catholic Moms (which I SO recommend, even if you are not Catholic. It has been one of the best day starters for me EVER). These prompts fill me and challenge me in just the right ways. WOW.
My husband brought home something really fantastic for us both to do for Lent that he picked up at his other Church music job. It's called (and it doesn't have words on its cover - just the color black) The Little Black Book: Six Minute Meditations on the Sunday Gospels of Lent and this little book is AMAZING. The church gave it out to their lay ministers (my husband is a music minister), and from going to their website - you can buy these booklets for yourself, gifts, or as a church to give to its members. I adore this book!
In fact, this little black book led to this post. Today's meditation was on Matthew 17:4. Particularly this: "Lord, it is good that we are here" said by Peter to our transfigured Lord appearing with Moses and Elijah. Here was what spoke to me:
"Lord, it is good that we are here." Peter wasn't just speaking about the place on the mountain where they happened to be at the time. He was also referring to his place on life's journey.
Peter's remark didn't mean that everything was all worked out, or that his life's journey was at an end. Peter and the disciples had many more miles to go and their journey would have its ups and downs.
Peter, after all, would soon deny Jesus three times.
There would be pain, suffering, confusion.
Nevertheless, Peter has a strong sense of being called by the Lord to the journey he was on, and a strong sense of the Lord's presence. The Lord had called him to the life he had, and the Lord was with him every step of the way.
Peter could say about his life, "It is good that we are here."
Can I say that about my life?
Lent is a good time to think about that.
