Small Successes and Thankful Thursday - "Getting Sick? " Edition

FaithButton

Good morning!!

I feel we've been so busy. Then, yesterday evening I went from feeling great to feeling sick with an oncoming cold. Boo as we head into the weekend - but I can find some successes and blessings I'm sure!!!

1. Gift slept 7 hours in a row the last 2 nights. He doesn't fall asleep till 12am or 2am, but then seems to sleep and sleep. Odd that extra rest gives me a cold...hmmmm LOL!

2. I only have one more load of clothes left to clean and fold before the weekend!

3. I'm getting books still ordered for homeschool, and checking my resources and such. It's so hard to get anything done!!! I wanna be planned soon! Kris...I need to get to your house :)

Bonus 4. I made calls about keeping my teaching certificate renewed next year. It felt great to be on top of it, and I loved the news I got. It'll be easier to keep it current than I assumed since I'm not teaching high school currently. I don't want to lose what I worked so hard for, and enjoyed doing, for many years.

Question for anyone reading - what materials do you find most helpful for a homeschool classroom? All methods or schooling ideas welcome!

How's your week?

Thankful Thursday
This week I'm INCREDIBLY grateful for...

1. good health (even with colds).
2. buy 1 get 1 free sales!
3. my parents.
4. my sister.
5. my family.
6. my girls!
7. my son!
8. my husband!
9. great faith!

Much love!

  1. Great List! Hope you're feeling better soon. Sometimes those colds are God's way of telling us to slow down.

As to homeschooling, you'll probably get as many resources & material suggestions as you'll get comments! Everyone has something different that they like. We've changed numerous times, trying to find the right fit (& each child is different, too...so that makes it even more fun!) This year we are mostly using Catholic Heritage Curricula materials. I've used some of theirs in the past & really like them. The best advice I can give is to keep is simple when starting off. Oh, & try not to compare yourself to others. That was my BIGGEST mistake in the beginning! All of us are different & what works great for some may be a horrible fit for others. God Bless as you begin your HS journey!

  2. Great List, so glad maintaining your license should not be too difficult. Hope you are feeling well soon.

  3. Great list, get well soon.

When we started homeschooling we had a K, toddler, and new baby too. Now, 11 years later, we still have toddler, but we do things a little differently than when I began, or even the way we did 2 years ago. I try to include the little ones with everything. I don't make the toddler do any work. But, while I am teaching printing to my K my toddler can sit and draw with similar items. If I am reading something to my K then my toddler gets to have his book next (or sometimes first). Basically, I am trying to include everyone as much as possible. The "school" day goes longer but it's because we are learning and playing in a fun way rather than pushing the toddler and baby aside to do schoolwork with the K so we can all play afterwards. I do, however, still use the TV for my younger child if I need to do something my other child finds too challenging without being able to fully concentrate. But...keep school fun. Know what your goal is for K

That being said, my favorite things for young kids are:
    1. Roll A Dough letters by Handwriting without Tears
    2. Meaningful math manipulatives from Activites for Learning (Rightstart Math)
    3. Add-A-Century Timeline. Wish we had started this years ago....but we started it a few years ago and even added family members. Whenever we learn about someone knew we put the picture up there.
    4. Five in a Row books.

    Have a great year!

  4. Hooray for the many great successes! Try not too push too hard...our bodies crash and burn as soon as we slow down from nonstop activities.

  5. Keep it simple, as the above poster said. Once you settle on curriculum, if it's working, don't look around too much for other options - you will only confuse the issue!! For my little ones, I like to keep the books in a big basket or bin that I can move around, so we have flexibility with where we do school. Also, don't stress about getting everything done in a certain time, order, way, etc., with a baby and a toddler around.

  6. Hey Chica! Great week, great successes! Remember to rest when you can. Your body is telling you it's tired.

Love the "Five In A Row" books/resources as well as the CHC religion resources. Simplicity is best in the beginning. Remember to read aloud often. It really stimulates learning and helps so much with beginning to read.

But you would know this...your a teacher! Yea you that you can keep your license.

PS. So happy you got the package. It was a pleasure to send. So many happy hours spent reading those. Enjoy my sweet friend! Have a great weekend and feel better soon!

  7. Great job on your successes! I need to look into how to keep my teaching certificate current without teaching too.

My oldest is 2 1/2, but we've started lightly "rowing" some Before Five in a Row books. I LOVE it!
