Small Successes and Thankful Thursday: "One Foot in Front of the Other" Edition

FaithButton

Well, it's been a week. Not the best week, but certainly not a bad week. I've been sleepy, but we've gotten out - gotten some routine. I think next week I could use a few more slower paced mornings instead of being out of the house by 10am for the library, or something else. We'll see.

What else have I done?

1. I have gone through my clothes in both the closet and my personal dresser drawers and parted ways with clothes I KNOW I don't need. As I lose some post baby curves (no rush) I can figure out what else I can part with. It felt great to do this. My drawers are no longer stuffed! I do have some old T-shirts I'd love to turn into a quilt. I KNOW I'll never get around to this, but does anyone out there know of an etsy artist or company that will take my shirts and make a quilt FOR me? :)

2. I caught up on folding a ton of laundry that needed to get done from the 4th! WOW! If I can do a load today, I'll be ahead of the game vs letting load after load pile up....

3. I have started the book ordering process for homeschooling. I'll be taking a classical approach to learning (something Lovely and I both seem to learn from style wise) along with embracing other methods (Montessori, Waldorf based learning from Serendipity - especially for little Val as I work with her too - even at her age, Faber for music, and some Suzuki in music as well). I just can't wait to give this a go. I like trying different methods because we're not all cut one way. My girls are into books, but they love imaginative play, fairy tales, and music. I also am seeing Lovely is quite the artist. So, I have a multi-faceted child(ren) and need to do different learning. Just listing all that exhausts me....what am I getting into? LOL!! But, it's also been fun looking up places I want to take Lovely to for field trips and pricing passes, etc. I'm praying this is for us and we both enjoy it. So, that is a start and very small success I'm adding to this coming week.

*** side note ***Does anyone do 1-2-3 Magic out there in their homes for discipline? A friend loaned my husband the DVD (I've heard of the book; just never made the time to read it). I have it now in the background, and I like it. A few moms in our Mommy Group use it, and I like seeing them do it - we've never used it as so far my eldest listens usually on the 1st warning, but she (and I) are getting more verbal with each other and I find myself doing more explanations/arguing since the baby came in my tired state (I'm not thinking as much). I need to be accountable and follow through! Since I know homeschooling is going to have Lovely and I together all. the. time I want to come up with a less verbal approach. She and I may butt heads over learning as it is, so I want to keep the peace and be short and direct as much as I can. The video is great, and it is also geared for teachers...so...I wondered if anyone else uses it.

How goes your week?

  1. I love your take on homeschooling, because you're right, we're not all cut the same way! Having a child with autism, we are learning that all too well. I am pretty sure she will be going to school (to help with services) but I am also fairly certain I would like to homeschool the boys. So, it's helpful to see others embrace an approach I could easily see myself doing! Have you ever been to Starry Sky Ranch's blog? (starryskyranch.typepad.com) she is a user of Montessori and Waldorf both too.

  2. Yea for the homeschooling! We did it for ten years from second through twelfth and used many different methods as we went along. Kids change and develop different skills at different times. Just remember to be in the moment with them and try not to get overwhelmed with the details.

Karen - I sent my disabled daughter to school as well. She received all kinds of therapy that we could not provide. I homeschooled my son and really enjoyed that time together. It worked well for our family. I wish you all the best with yours.

  3. Way to go on your successes this week! Just a note on Suzuki: Love it! My oldest went to a Suzuki String camp last week and we are signing her up in the fall. My DH was a former Suzuki student back when it started in our city almost 30 yrs ago!

  4. Laundry...the great archenemy in my world of six clothes wearing (thank goodness) children. Great job this week. Have fun with the book shopping. I always enjoyed that part of homeschooling. It was setting up the schedule for the year that made my eyeballs pop out! :o)

  5. I'm excited to read more about your homeschooling plans and how it goes. I'd like very much to homeschool Bean (and any future children we might be blessed with), so even though it's quite early, I'm doing as much research as I can.

  6. I haven't read 1-2-3 Magic, but I think just based on the little bit of info that I have found online, you have to take bits of pieces of it and find what works for you. There aren't any books out there (except the Bible) that have all of the answers. The book seems to have pretty good reviews from licensed behavioral therapists, but they all say that there are some parts that they don't agree with. You are doing a great job Becca! Your kids are all great. :)

  7. Sounds like you had a productive week. I'm making getting my laundry folded the mission of the day. I think July 4th or 5th was the last time I folded clothes and the mountain of clothes I had sitting my living room were proof of that fact. I look forward to reading about your experiences with homeschooling. I may be headed in that direction next year. I'm trying to talk to homeschoolers in my area before I make a final decision.

  8. Quilting supply stores often have quilting services or perhaps a pin up board for people who do- I'll e-mail you privately the location of one store not far from us.
I'm sure you have the skills to make that kind of quilt, but as a mom of 3 now, who knows when you'll have the time, right?!
Do you still have the 123 DVD? I'd love to check it out too!
